ATS-Friendly Resume Format: A Practical Checklist

An ATS-friendly resume is primarily a readable, truthful, job-relevant document. The goal is not to trick an ATS; it is to make the information easy to identify and evaluate.

1. Use clear headings

Headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education make the document easier to scan.

2. Keep contact details obvious

Put your name, professional email, phone number, and relevant location or portfolio information in a clear area near the top.

3. Write measurable experience bullets

Describe what you did and, where truthful, show scale or outcomes. For example, explain a process you improved, a project you delivered, or a metric you influenced.

4. Avoid unnecessary design complexity

Use readable typography and consistent spacing. Be cautious with tables, text boxes, decorative graphics, and layouts that make the reading order ambiguous.

5. Match the job description honestly

Use relevant terminology from the job description when it accurately describes your experience. Do not add skills you do not have.
